Stolen football autographed by Brady, former Patriots QBs recovered by police

This football that was autographed by all three quarterbacks on the Super Bowl-winning 2001 New England Patriots — Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe and Damon Huard — was stolen from J.C. Cannistraro, LLC — a mechanical construction company based in Watertown, Massachusetts — during a location move in December 2022. Police were able to recover the stolen football on Jan. 18, 2023.

Police in Massachusetts have recovered a stolen football that was autographed by all three quarterbacks on the Super Bowl-winning 2001 New England Patriots, including Tom Brady.The Watertown Police Department shared on Facebook that a football signed by Brady, starter-turned-backup Drew Bledsoe and third-stringer Damon Huard was taken from J.C. Cannistraro, LLC, a mechanical construction company based in Watertown, during a location move last month.Watertown police Lt. James O'Connor told NewsCenter 5's Danae Bucci that an employee of J.C. Cannistraro saw the football listed for $500 on eBay."We were lucky, timeline wise, because a Tom Brady football, we would anticipate, wouldn't stay up on eBay for long," O'Connor said.Wednesday, undercover Watertown and Woburn police detectives set up a meeting to purchase the ball at a location in Woburn. The collectible was then recovered by police and returned to J.C. Cannistraro."Certainly, the MVP in this one goes to our Watertown detectives for getting that back," O'Connor said.Along with the quarterbacks' autographs, the football also features the following message: "Thank you J.C. Cannistraro, Inc. for all of your hard work and effort on CMGI Field."CMGI Field was the original name of Gillette Stadium and still had the original name during the Foxborough venue's soft opening on May 11, 2002, when the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer defeated the Dallas Burn, now FC Dallas.CMGI, an Andover-based internet firm, relinquished the naming rights to the venue following the burst of the dot-com bubble, a month before the first regular-season NFL game was set to be played there.The Gillette Company then finalized an agreement for exclusive naming rights to the stadium on Aug. 5, 2002, and 12 days later, the Patriots hosted their first football game at Gillette Stadium — a preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles.Watertown police said the investigation remains ongoing as it relates to the person who tried to sell the stolen football, including how the seller got the ball and what their intentions were.
