It's official: Motorola and Lenovo made one of the worst iPhone X clones yet (Updated)

Why be original when you can copy someone else?

Update, August 15 at 2:19 p.m. ET: It’s official — Motorola has officially announced its new P30 smartphone in China. It appears to be just as much of an iPhone X ripoff as the leaks suggested, complete with some HUAWEI P20 Pro flair thrown in.

Let’s run through the specs. The Motorola P30 sports a 6.2-inch 19:9 LCD display with a resolution of 2,246 x 1,080. Under the hood, it’s powered by a Snapdragon 636 SoC clocked at 1.8GHz, backed by 6GB of RAM, and comes with either 64 or 128GB of storage with microSD support. It comes with a pretty average-sized 3,000mAh battery, as well as a USB Type-C port.

On the camera front, the device sports a dual-camera setup with one 16MP (f/1.8) sensor and a secondary 5MP (f/2.2) sensor. On the front, the P30 has a 12MP sensor with a selfie flash.

It’s running Lenovo’s ZUI 4.0, which is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. This is a phone for the Chinese market, so we weren’t expecting it to launch with near-vanilla Android like Motorola’s other U.S.-focused phones.

The P30 will go on sale September 15 for 2,099 RMB (~$300) in Aurora, Ice Jade White, and Bright Black colors.

Original article, August 14 at 12:40 p.m. ET: Motorola is expected to launch a new smartphone lineup in China this week, and it’s pretty clear where the company got its design inspiration. The upcoming Motorola P30, according to renders obtained by AndroidPure, is going to be one of the most shameless iPhone X ripoffs of the year.

If I learned one thing from grade school, it was that copying is not okay. That apparently doesn’t apply to Lenovo and Motorola.

Just look at this thing. The vertically stacked cameras, the big ol’ notch, the glass back, the aluminum sides, the wallpaper, and even the clock on the lock screen look just like the iPhone X. It’s one thing to take a few design elements from Apple’s flagship, but this is going overboard. This is Xiaomi Mi 8-level copying.

Okay, okay, there are some differences between the two phones. The P30 has a larger chin with a Motorola logo, and there’s a fingerprint sensor on the back. Aside from that, this is an iPhone running Android. Not cool, Motorola.

The Motorola P30 is rumored to come with a 6.2-inch 19:9 aspect ratio display, 6GB of RAM, either 64 or 128GB of internal storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. It’ll also reportedly come with 16 and 5MP rear cameras, while the front may feature a 12MP sensor. There will also be a Motorola P30 Note and P30 Play announced at the same time, but details on those phones are scarce at the moment.

According to leaked product listings, the Motorola P30 should go on sale for around RMB 1,999 (~$285). There’s a chance the company could launch the phones on Wednesday, August 15, so we don’t have long to wait for more details on availability and other specs.
