Earlier this year the doomsday clock was moved to two minutes to midnight, the same as it was at the height of the Cold War in 1953. Nuclear proliferation, rogues states and terrorists, and reckless rhetoric have brought nuclear weapons back into the headlines. At the same time, 122 nations voted at the UN General Assembly for a treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons. Is this a pipedream? Have nuclear weapons actually helped to maintain international security? Or are we closer than ever to nuclear catastrophe?

Examine the current situation and outlook for the future with our expert panel:

  • Prof Ramesh Thakur, Director of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament in the Crawford School at the Australian National University and Co-convenor of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament
  • Prof Richard Tanter, Senior Research Associate, Nautilus Institute, and Honorary Professor in the School of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Melbourne
  • Jody Broun, NSW/ACT Director of the Australian Red Cross
  • Dr Bernhard Limburg, Austrian Ambassador to Australia
  • Dr Stephan Frühling, Associate Dean (Education) of the College of Asia and the Pacific, and Associate Professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre of the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University
  • John Carlson, former Director-General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office
  • Humphrey McQueen, moderator
