Principal’s Report

Much has been happening at the school since our last news review and with the next holidays approaching, we are already preparing for our Year 12s to finish their journey with us. Notes have gone home to parents detailing the various procedures and final celebrations and we look forward wishing them well as they prepare for their final days at school.

Kalamunda Day is one of the highlights of the school year, and our assembly was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our school values. You can read more about the activities later in this issue. Thank you to Mrs Swithenbank and the IDEAS committee for their efforts in putting on a wonderful day.

In Week 4 we also celebrated Languages week and our Italian students excelled themselves in the inaugural “Un Pezzo D’Italia” (A piece of Italy). Thank you to all our students who entered and Mrs Pennington for her work hosting this with Lesmurdie SHS. We congratulate Chamoda Idamgedara and Louise Sieczka for winning first and second place in the competition.

Week 5 we held our parent teacher meetings and hopefully this provided a valuable opportunity to meet with teachers, and, together with the students, help set some goals for the second half of the year. NAPLAN results for our Year 7 and 9s have been sent home to parents this week and round two of the OLNA testing is underway for our Year 10 to 12s.

In preparation for next year our course selections are almost complete, our primary transition program is well underway and the selection process for next year’s Head Boy and Head Girl almost finalised. Next term we will be running our selection process for our second year of Middle School Leaders and I encourage our Year 8 students to consider running for these positions.

On Friday in Week 6 we held our House Athletics Carnival for the second year on our own school oval. It was amazing weather and a wonderful day. Our thanks go to our amazing parents from the P&C and our Canteen staff who organised and ran the sausage sizzle. It was such a great sense of community and we congratulate all competitors and champions of the day.

Week 6 also saw a team of 10 students from Years 7 to 9 compete in a full day challenge to raise money for The Kid’s Cancer Project. The students formed two teams and produced two books “A Loss in Connection” and “Here Comes the Bridesmaid” which is no mean feat. Congratulations to Mrs Stokes for coordinating this event for a worthy cause.

This year, five of our students submitted entries to the prestigious Premier’s ANZAC Tour. We congratulate Vy Nguyen who has been named a finalist and will progress to the next round of the selection process. We wish her well and congratulate all students on their submissions.

The Hon Sue Ellery, Minister for Education and Training visited the school in Week 7, along with Matthew Hughes MLA (Member for Kalamunda). They toured the school and Education Support Centre to visit classrooms, speak with staff, meet School Board and P&C members and view our facilities. Minister Ellery complimented the school on the range of programs on offer here and made particular mention of our student leaders as wonderful ambassadors for our school.

The week ended with a Father’s Day breakfast to celebrate fathers and father figures in our lives. Wayne Bradshaw from the Fathering Project gave some words of advice and shared some dad jokes with the group. Sian Crossman also gave a powerful speech sharing what her father means to her. Thank you to our school psychologist, Jenny Edmonds for organising such a successful morning.

Cause to be proud

We have eight students with work being represented at the Young Originals exhibition shortly and two students, Jazmin Welch and James Falzon who won first prize in two separate categories at Outside the Frame in Armadale.

Congratulations also to our Music students who competed in the Opus 2017 at the Perth Concert Hall and ABODE music festivals.

Last issue we congratulated Krystal Adranio and Brianna Grant, who have achieved their Queens Guide Award for Girl Guides.

Cameron Bell, Year 8, was selected to represent Western Australia in the Phil Ginsberg 13 and under National Ice Hockey Tournament held in August.

Congratulations to these students and to our many Kalamunda students who do us proud in their high achievements and by representing the state in events.

Welcome to our Kalamunda family

We welcome back Mr Eassie to the Learning Centre along with Mr Young who has joined the school in Humanities and Mathematics.

We also welcome Gabriel Chessa, Darrelyn Karim, Richard Wilkes and Ivan Wilson to the school and hope that their time with us is very successful.

I wish everyone all the best for a relaxing holiday and look forward to a successful Term 4 ahead.

Senior School Report

As Term 3 draws quickly to an end, it is crucial for all Year 12 students to put in every effort to get all their work completed, achieve the best marks possible and be satisfied that you did your very best. There are still a few weeks left before the finishing post, so hopefully still time to take the necessary steps for a successful Year 12. Year 11 students still have a little way to go, so that allows, every opportunity for them to put in their best efforts to get those grades moving in the right direction and be able to move into Year 12. Having completed their course selections for next year, our Year 10 students are busy maintaining or improving their grades, to enable a smooth transition into 2018.

An information letter has been sent to parents detailing the procedures and events pertinent to the Year 12s. Mock exam timetables have been distributed and are in the second week of the holidays, Monday 2 to Friday 6 October. Good luck to all our Year 12s sitting mock exams. A gentle reminder that these exams are a significant part of your assessments and great preparation for the WACE exams that start, Wednesday 1 November. WACE exam timetables will soon be available, so please find a safe place to put them, as they are your entrance ticket to the exam.

Preparation and plans are already in motion for our Year 11 students for 2018. Ball information will be available shortly, giving an overview of the processes leading up to the Ball. Please take the time to read the letter comprehensively. Leavers Jackets are also under way with consideration of style, colour and fabric being decided by the committee, hopefully arriving at the best result for all. With this in mind Year 11 students need to remain focused on this year and finishing off well, in order to be eligible to move into Year 12.

Hopefully the last of the nasty viruses will be finished along with the completion of Term 3, so we can look forward to a great Term 4. Have a mini rest Year 10 and 11 students and come back ready for the last term.

Year 10 Report

As I write this I have just returned from having lunch with a group of Year 10 students who have been nominated by their teachers for ongoing great behaviour. It was lovely to spend lunch with a group of students who always do the right thing. The students were also really happy and some even shocked to be recognised by staff- but as I said to them we appreciate the ongoing fantastic behaviour that is demonstrated by nearly the entire cohort.

While I am on positive behaviour it was also nice to hear other staff commenting on the good behaviour of the Year 10s at the athletics carnival. It was a day where students who don’t normally interact with each other came together to work as a team. It is so nice to see.

Course selection for Year 11 has been finalised now. Unfortunately due to low numbers in some courses they were not viable to run next year- so some students were required to reselect their courses. In the final weeks of Term 4 as part of the transition students will participate in 3 days of Year 11 courses.

It is amazing to think that we have come to the end of Term 3- with only one more term to come. Have a safe and happy holidays and I look forward to a busy Term 4.

Attendance

If your child is away from school and you don’t receive an SMS can you please contact our Attendance Officer Mrs Hockley on 9293 6409 and let her know so she can update the system with correct numbers. When you are sent an SMS, we ask you to please reply, explaining why your child is absent or if you believe they are at school let us know so we can follow it up. Attendance is something that we need to work on together, and something we all need to take seriously. The Education Department recognises that any student who falls below 90% attendance, for whatever reason, is at academic risk (this works out as 1 day every 2 weeks, 1 week out of every term or 2 weeks each semester).

Uniform

Students are to be in full school uniform when in class and required to bring a change of clothes for Physical Education. Some students are thinking that if they have PE, Dance or Drama then it is acceptable for them to be in their sport uniform all day, or, if they have it Period 1, they can come to school in their PE uniform. This is not part of our uniform policy. I am also seeing a different array of shorts and pants being worn. Our uniform is only available at Lowes in Westfield Carousel. Just because pants or shorts are navy does not make them uniform. Enrolment at Kalamunda SHS, includes acceptance that students will abide by the school uniform.

With summer approaching can you please ensure that your child has the correct shorts. If you have issues with uniform arrangements please contact Student Services.

Guest Speakers

We have had a couple of recent visitors to the school to talk with our Middle School students about a range of topics. Adam and ’Marksman’ from Armed For Life came and spoke to the Year 9 cohort about choices and we had Starrs Productions come and present their play ‘Technobully’ to the Year 8 cohort on issues to do with Cyber bullying.

These are annual events and their messages are really clear and relevant. If you know of any Guest Speakers or would like to suggest some topics for Guest Speakers, then please contact any of our Year Coordinators with your suggestions.

Primary Transition

As part of our whole Primary School Transition Program, we are hosting the Year 6 students from our local intake schools this term and letting them experience a day in the life of a high school student. The day will focus on highlighting those things that are the same and different from primary school. Each primary school will visit separately so the students can feel comfortable with their current classmates and teachers. They will have a taste of attending lessons at a high school site by participating in lessons taught by high school staff. They will also have a tour, use the facilities (toilets, cafeteria etc) and experience lessons such as Science, Art and Design & Technology. This fantastic day is really enjoyed by all students, regardless of where they will be attending high school. We will run a ‘Catch Up Day’ for student who are not at one of our local intake schools but are coming to Kalamunda SHS next year.

These Transition Days are precursors to our Orientation Day that will be held on Friday 24 November at Kalamunda SHS. This day is for students to come together and meet their classmates and teachers for next year. It will be an opportunity to form friendships and to help orient students to the school facilities, routine and activities.

End of Year Reward Days

At the end of next term our Year 7s will experience a ‘Big Day In’, the Year 8s will be having an out of school activity day and the Year 9s will have their annual River Cruise night. Participation in these excursions will be based on students having their Good Standing and also on feedback from classroom teachers. More details will be released soon.

Year 9 Report

The Year 9 students attended an Armed for Life Session with Adam on Thursday 31 August. We met as a cohort at lunch time to share a BBQ sausage sizzle and drink. The session with Adam and hip-hop artist Marksman Lloyd was designed to educate students on Decision Making and Risk Taking.

Teenagers have hundreds of choices to make every day, and unfortunately they can get caught up in making decisions based on what their friends want rather than what’s best for them. Our values also determine how we make decisions. The program highlighted the importance of making our own decisions and taking responsibility for the decisions we make. Students were encouraged to consider what is important to them in relation to making decisions.

NAPLAN

Students should have received their NAPLAN results last week. Students who achieved Band 8 or higher in any of the three components of Reading, Writing and Numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are acknowledged as having demonstrated proficiency in using a range of Australian Core Skills Framework ACSF Level 3 skills in that component. They are not required to sit the corresponding OLNA component.

Please access more information regarding OLNA below.

Whilst reflecting on these results, please remember that there is no way to "test" all the amazing and awesome things that make your child the wonderfully unique person that they are!

Year 9 Leadership Awards

Our school community nominates Year 9 students who are demonstrating the characteristics, initiative and behaviour of great leaders and role models in our Year 9 Cohort.

Prior to each Middle School Assembly, nominations are reviewed by our Middle School Leaders and our Associate Principal, Mr Mark Pettit and worthy recipients are acknowledged. The Middle School Leadership Award focuses on recognising the School Values of Respect, Pride, Resilience, Community and Love of Learning. In recognition of these admirable attributes, each student will be awarded with a Year 9 Leadership Award Pin and Certificate.

Sijka’s Squad – Week 6 Term 3

Students who were demonstrating a ‘Love of Learning’ in an outstanding way were nominated by their teachers this term. These students will be rewarded with a morning tea with Mrs Sijka – delicious chocolate croissants and a warm drink.

KSHS Good Standing

Please check your child’s Student Planner for information about maintaining Student Good Standing to ensure that your child will be included in the reward at the end of this semester, which is our Year 9 River Cruise. In previous years, the Year 9 students have enjoyed this exciting event and I would be disappointed if students were unable to attend due to losing their Good Standing. I would like to encourage a particular focus on wearing appropriate school uniform this term – no hoodies please.

Thank you for your support and please don’t hesitate to contact me, your child’s Mentor Teacher or Learning Area Teacher if you have any questions. Nicole.Sijka@education.wa.edu.au

Year 8 Report

The end of Term 3 is almost upon us, and what a busy term it has been. The beginning saw Year 8s receive their Semester 1 report, attend an incursion on Technobullying in Week 5 and in Week 6 compete in the Athletics Carnival. I hope all Year 8s have been able to set new goals and are working on making improvements for their Semester 2 report.

In Week 5, Class Act Theatre presented a play that explores all facets of electronic bullying. These included appropriate use of the internet, social networking, chat rooms, appropriate mobile phone use and text messaging. Some of the issues that were highlighted were how to prevent cyber bullying, build friendships and self-esteem. It would be great for you to have a chat to your son or daughter to reinforce these messages.

Since Term 2, I have been running a uniform audit competition between all Year 8 Mentors. I am pleased to say that as a whole cohort, the Year 8s are increasingly wearing the correct school uniform. I have also had positive comments from other teachers. There are still a few students wearing the wrong pants, hooded jumpers and black undershirts. Lowes do have all required uniform pieces in stock so please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform so they avoid losing their Good Standing.

During Week 5 we held our rewards assembly. The following students were rewarded for their effort in class, behaviour and standard of work they have been able to produce.

Student Council Elections

All students in Year 11 who are returning to school as Year 12 students in 2018 with Good Standing status were eligible to apply for the positions of Head Boy/Girl, Prefects and House Captains for 2018.

The Year 11 group voted for their Head Boy, Head Girl and Student Prefects in preferential order. House Captain nominations did not need to go to ballot. A special Year 11 assembly on Tuesday 22 August was held where candidates gave a 3 minute speech to the audience addressing why they were the best candidate for the position. This was followed by a student and staff voting process.

Students who applied for Head Boy/Girl were short-listed following their speech, a vote by the Year 11 students and academic staff. The Principal, Manager Student Services and the Head of Senior School will interview short-listed students as the final step in selections.

All three aspects speech, voting and interview are taken into account in making the final selection.

The announcement and handover of the student Council leadership positions will take place at the Year 12 final assembly on 22 September.

Uniform

Students are expected to be in full school uniform at the start of Term 4 and will lose their Good Standing if they are not. This will have implications on all students wanting to participate in extracurricular activities such as the School Ball.

Kalamunda Senior High School’s Uniform Policy was developed by the School Board in accordance with Department of Education policy and guidelines on dress standards for students in public schools. The wearing of school uniform is supported by the Kalamunda SHS community and is a symbol of pride in the school.

There is an expectation and a condition of enrolment that students will comply with the school uniform.

School uniforms can be purchased through LOWES at Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre.

Uniforms can also be purchased online or in the store: Shop 1014/15 Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre, 1382 Albany Highway, Cannington (08 9258 7050).

Kalamunda SHS Soccer Program Starting In 2018

Kalamunda SHS Physical Education Department, is excited to announce that Year 8 students in 2018, will be able to select a new program specialising in soccer. Year 7 students are currently being placed through a 10 week soccer training program during Physical Education. These sessions are fun, exciting, heavily skill acquisition focused and based around the nationally recognised Football Federation Australia coaching methods. At the conclusion of the 10 week program, a number of students will then be selected to try out for the program, with testing taking place during Week 1 of Term 4. All students that are successful in their trial, and wish to take part in the program, will then receive two sessions of soccer per week in 2018. Students will receive one session of coaching per week by Mark Humphreys, who is an accredited soccer coach and a State League Soccer Coach at Ashfield Soccer Club. While the other sessions will be taken by coaches from Coerver.

Kalamunda SHS is very excited to announce a partnership with Coerver Soccer Coaching, which have coaching facilities in every continent in the world and is regarded as one of the best, and have the most successful coaching methods with young people worldwide. Students will also receive state of the art testing from Screening Lab, and an individualised injury prevention plan written by Physiotherapists which will assist with their strength and conditioning.

If you are interested in your son or daughter taking part in the program, or if you have any further queries, please contact Mark Humphreys via email Mark.Humphreys@education.wa.edu.au.

Act, Belong, Commit, Kalamunda Day 2017

Act, Belong, Commit

Act, Belong, Commit

Kalamunda Senior High School celebrated their annual Act Belong Commit Kalamunda Day on Tuesday, 8 August. Once again the school community had the opportunity to recognise the school values of Love of Learning, Pride, Respect, Resilience and Community. As usual the weather was a little damp but we were still able to enjoy the wide variety of afternoon activities which were on offer thanks to the variety of ideas presented and coordinated by all the Learning Areas.

The day began with the traditional assembly where the students were treated to an array of performances beginning with the traditional parade of nations recognising our diverse multicultural school community, over 40 nations were represented. A fantastic rendition of We are Australian by students Paris Johnston and Annalise Stevens, gave a sense of pride to us all, for being Australian.

Mrs Deacon our School Principal spoke to us about what it means to be a part of our wonderful Kalamunda School Community. It is our school values which connects us here and now in the present and what we share about being part of this school. Mrs Deacon reflected that we are all on a journey, life is a journey! It is hoped that the Kalamunda students will see our school values as things to be picked up from being part of our school and that these values will be taken with students when they leave, as part of a tool bag to be able to be ready for life ahead. Pride, Respect, Resilience, Love of Learning and Community are all lifelong values. Love of Learning was the main value discussed by Mrs Deacon and she presented the idea that as a school we hope our students want to enjoy the challenge of learning new things, of gaining the skills and resilience to keep trying when the learning is hard.

The morning was run extremely well by our Year 12 leaders, Nahdarin Yahya, James Falzon, Brittany Isaia, Gemma Addison and Jonathon Hoey. These students introduced the variety of performances and guest speakers clearly and professionally. Both Nahdarin and James reminded the audience of our school values of Love of Learning, Pride, Respect, Resilience and Community. Our value of resilience was presented by three different students through a visual presentation. Thanks go to Natasha Gardiner, Matt Vietta and Oliver Wei for their insight and perspective on how each of them has had to draw on their own resilience to face the challenges of a senior high school, to successfully reach Year 12.

Performances by the Acapella choir with a rendition of Hallelujah and the Kalamunda School Band kept the school community enthralled and entertained. The performances were greatly appreciated by the audience. A visual presentation celebrating all the successful activities Kalamunda SHS students completed in 2016, was a fantastic reminder how our school values are always with us.

Mrs Morton reminded us all of our commitment to the ‘Act, Belong, Commit’ aspect of Kalamunda Day and that as a school we have been provided with a framework to promote positive mental health to help our students build individual resilience and strengthen community cohesion. The ethos is to encourage all people, young and old to be active – both physically and mentally by belonging to different clubs and groups in the school and in the community, and also to commit by making a commitment to the community, a cause or an interest. We were also reminded that we will be running Mental Health week in Term 4 Week 1, and R U OK Day on 15 September.

The afternoon activities were kicked off with a sausage sizzle lunch for a gold coin donation. All Learning Areas rose to the occasion to organise a variety of activities to captivate and cater for all the diverse interests of our students. There were minty wrapper competitions and board games, robotics, liquid nitrogen demonstrations along with human reflex testing. We had active games in the gym with sumo wrestling, a bungy run and a pacific combo activity. We also had an escape room activity which was quickly booked out and wonderful music student performances in the cafeteria which entertained us all. The silent groove was a very entertaining novelty appreciated by many. There was also cosmopolitan sweet tasting, teamed writing activities, theatre immersions and a mini olympics. The library also hosted an informative and fabulous Act Belong Commit Mental Health expo where students were able to seek information regarding the large number of services available in our community to support their needs through their teenage years.

The day was definitely one to remember and it was fabulous to see the school community come together to enjoy the many activities provided. We have a fantastic school community who are continuously demonstrating our school values of Respect, Resilience, Community, Pride and Love of Learning, without you all, the day would not have been so successful.

Music

August has been a busy and productive month featuring numerous music festivals and school performances.

Earlier in the month on the 8 August the school was inundated by many music performances throughout the annual school values day ‘Kalamunda Day’. The concert band performed at the assembly and Miss Vivian’s Acapella choir performed a very moving rendition of Cohen’s Hallelujah. As the day progressed the Year 11 certificate of music students stage managed musical performances in the canteen which featured performers from Year 9 to Year 12. Despite the wet and windy weather the canteen was a cosy hangout for performers and audience.

August also signifies one of the busiest months on the music calendar with numerous music festivals. Once again Kalamunda SHS has contributed significantly across the festivals receiving accolades of excellence and outstanding and I congratulate all students involved. We have well over one hundred performing music students in the department now who regularly rehearse and perform in many ensembles and bands including the two concert bands, string orchestra, choirs, guitar ensemble, rock bands and percussion ensemble. It is during these festival times that we see all the hard work put into the program paying off and it certainly makes those early morning rehearsals well worthwhile. Well done to all we are truly proud of your achievements!!

Fast approaching is our end of year grand finale the twilight concert. The concert is on Wednesday 25 October Week 3 Term 4. This is the biggest concert of the year and we have some wonderful surprises up our sleeve, please save the date and think about who might want to come along – family members and so on. Tickets will be at the door and the concert will again be in the main quad in the heart of the school.

More details will follow closer to the event and may I remind all new students to make sure you have ordered a music performance uniform and that all music students are on the school music mailing list. If there are any concerns or questions please email Alex Stevens our Musikal secretary at janda@iinet.net.au.

Many thanks

Alla Moda! In Fashion!

This term, Year 8 Italian students have been studying how Italian fashion has impacted our styling trends, hairstyles and even identities. Fashion has always been part of Italy’s cultural life and society. After all, Italians are known for wanting to make una bella figura (a good impression) through their style. Students have learnt how to describe clothing using a variety of adjectives and also apply new verbs in their speaking and writing tasks. Fashion and clothing is portrayed uniquely in all cultures. It is important for us to acknowledge how people from different countries express themselves through colour, patterns, fabrics and accessories. Italian students are now preparing for their “Sfilata di Moda” i movies (fashion shows). Students must create the passerella (catwalk) and choose a theme to present in their movies. This project is a fantastic way to showcase students’ creativity, speaking skills and savvy technological skills.

Indonesian

On the 21 August 2017, students in Year 8 and 9 studying Indonesian had the opportunity to participate in two traditional Indonesian dances mainly from the island of Sumatra with dance instructors Jemma Malik and Bang Murtala from Suara Indonesian Dance. Indonesian dance reflects on the richness and diversity of Indonesia. The dances reflect on the ethnicity of the group of people from the various islands and this art of dance has developed since ancient times. The dances are an interpretation, inspiration and exploration of the people and their surrounding communities. About nine students studying Japanese joined the Indonesian students in this incursion. It is a great opportunity for these students to experience this performance.

The Randai is traditional theatre from that originates from west Sumatra that has a unique structure and presentation. It incorporates singing, dance movement based in silat that takes place along a circle. The characters move in and out of the circle.

The Saman dance is the most popular dance in Indonesian and it originates from the ethnic group Gayo from Gayo Lues, Acheh province of Sumatra. The dance is characterised by fast-paced rhythm and common harmony between dances. This dance is not normally accompanied by any musical instruments. Here below you will see our students participating in the dances.

What’s on in Science

Evolution: Steps into past of humans

The Year 12 ATAR Human Biology Students have this week been observing the characteristics of the different human species. They have been enjoying taking skull measurements and looking at the trends in how our skull morphology has changed over time.

The model skulls they have been using are replicas of real life fossils of ancestral human remains. They have been observing the features from our earliest human forms up to our more modern features. This has given them hands on and expert knowledge in the theories underpinning human evolution.

Physics students catapult their way to victory!

The Year 12 ATAR Physics students have created some impressive medieval weapons. They have been using their scientific knowledge to make the best catapults. Their task was to fire an egg the greatest distance and ensure it had a safe landing. It provided the students with a fantastic hands on learning experience seeing the physics concepts at work.

The students took to the oval on a beautiful, sunny day to test their powerful machines. The longest distance travelled was achieved by Jessica Russell and Tarshi Johansen however, the team consisting of Eleanor Newton and Lloyd Plunkett achieved victory by achieving a great distance and a safe landing for their egg cargo with the lightest capsule of 17g. A very successful project!

Primary Science

The Year 6 from many different primary schools within the Kalamunda area have been coming up to the high school to develop their skills in Science on Thursday afternoons. The students have been getting hands on with the investigative process observing the effects of magnets. They have then used this knowledge of how magnets work and the forces to make and explain magnetic slime.
