Principals Report

I would like to congratulate Natalie Harris and Sharan Hegney for receiving their 10 year Instructor Service Badge which was presented by Lynelle Fozard Strategic Volunteer Coordinator – Youth Programs from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. These two staff members alongside Mark Barritt and Peter McClay deliver, drive and support our Cadet program which gives our students the opportunity to learn new skills such as first aid, search and rescue, radio operation, fire extinguishing as well as have the opportunity to attend a camp at the end of each year.

We had the Halls Head ESC Year 10s over for a three day transition where they got to look around their new campus, to meet the staff and most of all to have lots of fun.

Thank you to Sue Howard for organising an amazing graduation. All the students looked fabulous in their gowns and sashes. If you would like photos from the day please bring in a thumb drive and we can give you a copy.

We are changing our newsletters to distribution from paper to electronic; you will be able to access the newsletter on John Tonkin College ESC Facebook, Webpage and Email. Please make sure your email address is up to date. If you would like one posted out please contact the school to let us know and we will put you on the mailing list.

I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year. We will be open for any late enrolments or information on the 29th January and students first day is on the 4th February 2019.

Students First Day Term 2

Classroom News

FG03

This term, FG03 continued our community access learning, by visiting our local Woolworths store. It was here that the students purchased items they needed for their cooking lesson that day. On their return from the shop, students would then follow a recipe and cook some yummy food for everyone to eat. FG03 has also continued on with their sewing, making Christmas items for their families and blankets for their pets.

It was FG03’s turn to host the school assembly, all the classes worked on the virtue of “Cooperation”. We observed what teamwork looks like, and what it means to be part of a team. We finished the term with a class party, where all the food served was cooked by the students in FG03. Well done FG03 on a great term!

T1

We can’t believe that it is the end of the year already. This Term we have enjoyed the cadet camps, going to Optus Stadium and The Nostalgia Box gaming museum in Northbridge. We also had the soccer carnival at Cannington ESC, where we won the cup!!

In class we have completed our health – sexuality education, and are impressed with students’ maturity and willingness to participate, even when it feels a little bit embarrassing.

Staff in T1 have been blown-away with the talent displayed during our virtues education, especially in the preparation for assemblies. We have been singing and acting and the increase in each individual student’s self-confidence, as displayed by performing in front of the whole school has been astonishing.

The T1 staff would like to wish all students and their families a safe and happy Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in 2019.

T2

The World Game has been a massive hit with all students in T2 this year. Students built their interest by following the teams in this year’s World Cup. Students randomly picked a country to support, then researched facts about the country. Students enjoyed following the overnight results with Tarnieka winning the competition by picking Croatia who were eventual runners up to France (who no one picked).

The students in T2 continued their hard work this term and successfully completed all assigned work for the year. The students all passed the Preliminary English and Maths course as well as all other assigned work. Students even found time to write, create and direct some great movies including Preston’s Lego movie. A highlight of the term was an excursion to the new Optus Stadium and a gaming museum Nostalgia Box in Northbridge called Nostalgia Box. A very successful and fun year was had by all. We would like to wish the graduating year 12’s well as they leave us and embark on their new life adventures.

Visage News

Wow, another year has ended so quickly!

The students have had a very busy but productive year. The Visage team worked extremely hard to complete (all Year 12s and one Year 11 student) the theoretical component of the course and learning skills such as eye lash tinting, mastering their manicures, excelling with make-up application, hair washing techniques with our new hair basin/seat; which was purchased with funds from our Salon Days and practicing hair up styles. I am so proud of the students for their commitment and dedication toward all their work throughout the year.

On a special note, I would like to congratulate Tamikia on being accepted into a make-up course in Perth, this has been achieved through her unrelenting commitment to learning and following her passion. SOOO proud Tamikia! Shout out to Forrest and Leia on their successful enrolment at Peel TAFE for 2019; where they will be studying Certificate II in Leadership (Beauty Focus), we wish you all the best.

Even with some ups and downs throughout the year as a group it has been an honour to see the maturity of all students’ blossom and teamwork became second nature, you all should be proud of yourselves.

I’d like to also a BIG thank you to my amazing colleagues, Charm Guest and Jacquie Willcocks for all that you did this year to help the students, I’m truly grateful.

Thank you all for an enjoyable year and I wish you all an exciting Christmas holiday.

Retail

Retail this term has been an amazing mix of providing outstanding customer service, being creative with colourful cooking, completing our studies and building on our special friendships. We thoroughly enjoyed serving the public at our Disabilities Expo and impressed our peers with our delicious food at our special “Free Build a Burger Day”.

Emergency Cadet Program

Term 4 has been a busy but exciting time for our cadets. In the first couple of weeks we studied survival skills, which covered a number of themes; from getting lost while bushwalking to breaking down in remote outback areas. During Week 4 we had an excursion in the morning to the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club to do a fishing clinic with the Fishability team. This was great fun, with a number of different fish and many blue swimmer crabs caught. After a BBQ lunch it was off to Keith Holmes Reserve for an afternoon kayaking session, it was good to see the improved paddling and balance skills of the cadets on the water.

From Week 5 we started preparing for camp, this included planning the activities, identifying the equipment which would be required, practicing how to erect tents, discussing where to safely place the tents and pre-packing the needed equipment. Before we knew it, it was Week 7 and the Year 12 Cadets were off to camp! We left early Wednesday morning for Ern Halliday recreation camp and from then on it was action packed with activities, fun and socialising. The activities included laser tag, dinner at Lone Star Rib House, watching a movie at Grand Cinemas, rock climbing, abseiling, bounce, tenpin bowling and archery. On our return to school on Friday afternoon, both the cadets and staff were exhausted, but we had all made great memories to share with family and friends. In week 8 it was the Year 11’s turn for their Cadet Camp, they stayed in dormitory style accommodation at Ern Halliday and enjoyed abseiling as well as lots of the same fun activities as the Year12’s had the week before.

On behalf of all the Cadet staff, I would like to congratulate the Year 12s on Graduating, and wish them the very best for their futures.

Workplace Learning

What a very quick year it has been!! At JTCESC we are always open to trying new things and in 2018 we trialled a new system for WPL whereby each class participated 1 day per week for 10 weeks. We felt that this was a successful way of programming WPL for those students who were able to work. A few students had their placement extended for a number of extra weeks. Year 12 students were enrolled in ADWPL and Year 11 in ASDAN Workright. The majority of students in both year groups were able to successfully complete the requirements and gained skills and confidence which will lead them to good stead for their life after school. All students and employers had a positive placement – which is wonderful news.

We would like to thank the parents/carers for your support in getting students appropriately organised for their placement and for ensuring that they have their completed logbook ready for in class activities each week.

Of course no workplace learning programme can operate without the support of the community –without the fantastic employers who support our school your student would not have been able to add to their resume all their skills and experience. Also thank you to our Education Assistants who provide support, encouragement and continuity for each student to promote a successful placement.

For those students returning in 2019 and our newcomers, if you have any suggestions for employers we would appreciate your input. At times we do have difficulty in finding suitable employers for our students and are always happy to add to our database.

We look forward to another successful year of workplace learning. Have a safe Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

A big thank you to all our employers:

Transition

It’s been a jam-packed Term 4! Let’s recap on all the fantastic things that happened in Transition throughout Term 4.

On Wednesday, 12 September 2018, JTCESC hosted the school’s annual Fostering Different Abilities Expo; however this year we did things a little different. It was our schools mission to bring information and awareness of services to ALL people with disabilities. Therefore, we extended the invitation to EVERYONE, this included all our past students and parents, to other local Education Support Centre’s in the area and all the local disability support service agencies in Mandurah.

The attendees enjoyed a cup of tea whilst the choir from Halls Head College Education Support Centre opened our Expo with a few songs. We had the privilege of George Wally doing a heartfelt Welcome to Country. We also had guest speakers from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the Youth Disability Advocacy Network (YDAN). Attendees had the opportunity to meet with a range of different Disability Service providers, there were 35 service providers exhibiting on the day! It was a super day, thanks to all those who attended and support us on the day

On Tuesday, 30 October 2018 the Transition Team attended the Abilities Expo – Pathway to the Future which was held at the Crown in Burswood.

This gave us a unique opportunity for JTCESC to showcase our brilliant school and engage directly with parents and carers as well as the greater community within WA who were seeking information about our great school.

Workshop

During Workshop on Thursdays, students planned and built a personal project. Some built a table; others made ‘work mates’ or planter boxes. All of the students worked really well and closely followed the safety procedures. It was exciting to see the students growing in confidence as they worked on new and different machinery. Everyone successfully completed the ASDAN Practical Workshop course providing them with a certificate of achievement. It was a great year in the workshop well done all!

Construction

The construction students finished off the year with the safe demolition of their projects and clean-up of the construction area and storage shed. Brodie and Jack knocked down their brick letterboxes. Tabitha knocked down her Brick BBQ and Jayden and Daniel finally came to terms with knocking down their beloved Brick ‘TARDIS’. Well done everyone for a great year in Construction.

Wonderful Wednesday’s & Fun Day Friday’s

Wednesdays were truly wonderful and Fridays were always fun! We continued to help Ms Christensen by cooking tasty food for Breakfast Club. We discovered some amazing parks, with awesome adventure playgrounds where we enjoyed relaxing picnics. During sewing sessions, supported by Mrs Craggs, we made some beautiful Christmas decorations and learned some useful new skills along the way. Last, but not least, we were helped by Mr Barritt and Mr McClay to build great toy trucks and lovely wooden boxes.

Art Room

What a successful year we have had. This term we worked mostly on printmaking, we made collograph prints, photo sensitive paper prints and lino prints.

Our final piece was printing onto a calico tote bag. The results were fabulous pieces of usable art.

Breakfast Club

We have had such a busy and productive term, the wonderful students from Wednesday Warriors and Fun Friday’s who helped with some yummy breakfast club food. They cooked muffins and zucchini slice which was enjoyed by everyone. Riverside and HHESC students came over for transition tried out the kitchen, HHESC students created “watermelon pizzas”.

Just in time for the festive season we baked and decorated Christmas cookies and cake. We also had a couple of “naughty Elves” come and sample our chocolate slice.

Soccer

In October there was the ESSN Soccer Carnival which we entered for the first time, we are only a small school with 27 students to choose from, yet we still made up 2 teams to compete. At first many students were nervous and hesitant to play but they soon came around and joined in. At the carnival we were drawn against schools that had many more students some with over 100 to choose from. Our Team 1, who we suspected were good, fought hard and made their way into the final against the hosts and reigning champions Cannington Community College ESC. Against the odds and following a brilliant defensive display we won 1-0, Captain Brodie launched a long-range ball to star striker Hayden who did the rest. We had promised Ms Hawkins that she would need to clear some shelf space to put a new trophy on and the students delivered. A stunning result and JTCESC is now proudly engraved on the trophy which resides in the administration office.

The confidence that the students have gained from the carnival has led them to our challenge JTC mainstream PE students. Our guys only lost 1-0 and put up a fine display.

Talented Tamikia

We have a talented netballer here at JTCESC Tamikia Galgey travelled to Brisbane in October to participate in the Marie Little OAM Shield Netball competition. She played a total of 10 games over 3 days; they finished fourth on the ladder an improvement from finishing sixth last year. She was also lucky enough to meet the Australian netball team the “Diamonds”. Well done Tamikia we are very proud of you.
