Governing nanotechnologies through societal engagement

Nanotechnologies – the purposeful engineering of matter on the atomic or molecular scale – have given rise to great expectations in recent years, unlocking new research opportunities in areas as diverse as energy, healthcare, electronics, food, and construction. At the same time, concerns have been raised about possible unintended consequences of the use of nanomaterials.

The EU-funded GoNano project enabled co-creation between citizens, researchers, industry, civil society organisations, and policy makers across Europe to align future nanotechnologies with societal needs and concerns. The project demonstrated how researchers can work with publics and professional stakeholders to create novel suggestions for future nanotechnology products through three co-creation pilots on nanotechnology in ‘Health’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Food’.

After three and a half years we finalized the GoNano project in December 2020. We would like to give a big thanks to all the citizens and stakeholders who have participated along the journey of enabling co-creation across Europe to align future nanotechnologies with societal needs and concerns.

If you are interested in the project’s outcomes you can explore our website and find all our published materials. We hope the project can keep giving inspiration and input to how citizen and stakeholder engagement can be implemented in multiple phases of research and innovation processes in nanotechnology and beyond. For any inquiries about the project please contact the Danish Board of Technology or one of the projects partners.
